Uroculture

It's an examination to detect and identify bacteria in urine and the sensitivity of these with different antibiotics (antibiogram). It's done from a urine sample in a sterile bottle. The result takes days.

Uroflowmetry

It is a painless examination, non-invasive, used to measure the urinary stream, its total volume and the time in which it is eliminated. You urinate in a special toilet which has the capacity to record some values and express them in a chart.

Uvulopalatophyringoplasty

It's a surgery of the tonsils and tissue of the back of the throat (uvula and soft palate)
Surgery lasts approximately 60 minutes. It's performed under general anesthesia
It helps breathing more easily, reducing snoring and treat sleep apnea.

Vaccination against rage

Is recommended in
- People who have not been bitten: if they travel to places where rage is a frequent disease or if they have the risk because of their job (vets).
In these cases there are 3 doses: 1st dose, second seven days later and third at 21 or 28 days later.
- People who have been bitten by a rabid animal or by a highly suspected of having rage animal.
In these cases:
1st: intramuscular immunoglobulin is placed and if it is possible the bite is also irrigated.
2do: first vaccine is applied as soon as possible and then 3 more doses (at 3 - 7 - 14 and 28 days) intramuscularly in the arm or the thigh.

They are smooth and cylindrical devices made of plastic or silicone, of different sizes, which contribute to stretch the muscles of the vagina to make them more flexible when they are introduced into it with the help of a lubricant.

Vaginoscopy

Study through which the doctor introduces in the vagina an instrument, called Vaginoscope, to observe the interior of it. There are different types of vaginoscopes that are adjusted based on the girl's age.

Varicocelectomy

Surgery to correct the testicular varicocele in which the veins that are abnormally dilated, are located, ligated and divided. Generally it is a mild hospitalization and patient can go home the day after the procedure.

VDRL

It is a test to detect syphilis. Syphilis is an infectious disease sexually transmitted. Through a blood test, it measures the antibodies the body can produce and if it was in contact with the bacterium causing syphilis.

Vellus hair

It is a device that when put in the superior and inferior vena cava (veins that moves blood from the body to the heart) prevents and avoids, in the majority of the cases, clot or thrombus migration towards the heart and lungs.
The collocation of the device is a simple procedure, performed under local anesthesia. It is introduced through a tap in the groin or neck. The monitoring of the device to its selected position is done through images.
It takes some minutes, without needing hospitalization.

VIH detection

It's a blood test that detects the presence of Antibodies (proteins produced by immune system of the body when it detects a foreign substance or microorganism) against VIH (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). This test is called ELISA and given that it's not specific of HIV infection, its result must be confirmed with another test called Western Blot.
The presence of antibodies shows that the person is infected with VIH.
